DIY Hairstyles for Her
Wavy Half-Up Twist
This style not only goes wonderfully with a strapless dress, but it is also one of the fastest and easiest styles on our list. First, while on low heat, use your curling iron to curl your hair. After each curl, run your fingers through to loosen the curl and create a wave. Once all your hair is curled, comb through it with a wide tooth comb and spray it with a light hairspray like Solutions by Great Clips® Buildable Hairspray or sea salt spray to hold the waves. To create the twists, simply part your hair, grab a one- to two-inch section on each side of your part closest to your forehead and twist! You can either secure the ends of each twist together with a fastener to create a small ponytail or secure each one with bobby pins.
Braided Crown
This look works for most hair lengths and types! Braid two sections of hair, each starting at your temple and pulling them toward the opposite side so they eventually meet in the middle and overlap. You can also French braid for a similar but more complex look. Then pin them in place, ideally with bobby pins that match your hair color. You can tuck the bobby pins into your hair to hide them.
Ballet Bun
If you’re looking for something classic, you can’t go wrong with the tight, high, ballet bun. Pull your hair back into a ponytail at the crown of your head, using a comb to remove any bumps and securing it with an elastic. Twist the ponytail to make the bun more secure and, after twisting, start to tightly wind your twisted ponytail around the elastic. When you’ve reached the end, secure it with bobby pins and copious amounts of hairspray like TIGI Bed Head Masterpiece Shine Hairspray. You can even add a bedazzled comb or flower to the bun to make it pop.
Loose Bun
Going for something a little more casual? The loose, messy bun is easy to style. Pull your hair into a loose ponytail and secure it at your crown. Take small sections of your ponytail, twist them and wrap them into a messy bun, looping the ends through the elastic. Loosen the front of your hair by pulling sections to create texture. You can even pull out some small sections near your temples and lightly curl them for added dimension. Add some bling with a shimmery headband, a glam barrette or accent bobby pins.
Voluminous Waves
This look brings even more glam and it’s perfect if you already have wavy or curly hair. Spray a texturizing spray such as Sexy Hair Curl Power Spray Foam into damp hair and let it air dry, lightly scrunching as it dries. Once your hair is completely dry, run your flat iron over two-inch sections from the top of your head to the top of your ear so the top lays flat and the bottom cascades into natural waves. You can also go over sections with a curling iron for more defined waves. Pin back one side of your hair with a sparkly clip to complement your dancewear.
For Him
Side Part
You are sure to impress on the dance floor with this slick style! The side-part is timeless and easy to achieve for guys with some length to work with. With damp hair, use a comb to create the part, then add a small amount of pomade or styling cream like GRIT Natural Style to hold your hair in place. As your hair dries, watch for pieces of hair that try to migrate back. If you can catch them in the act, slick them down with a little bit of extra styling cream or hairspray.
Classed-Up Man-Bun
For our long-haired fellas, try pulling it back into a styled bun. Work in a shine-boosting styling product such as Solutions Tea Tree Coconut Oil Texture to your hair while it’s still damp, then slick it back into a tight bun. Minimal effort for an eye-catching style!
Slicked-Back Retro
You can’t get much more classic than the slick-back. Similar to other styles, it’s best to start working with your hair while it’s damp. Work in a shine-enhancing pomade like American Crew Grooming Cream, grab a comb and start to work your hair back. If you need a little extra hold, a spritz of hairspray such as American Crew Grooming Spray or a small dollop of gel does the trick!
The Pompadour
This look may take some practice, but the payoff is worth it for this classy, chic style. While your hair is damp, apply your favorite pomade or styling wax like TIGI Bed Head Matte Separation Workable Wax for some extra hold. Blow dry your hair, starting at the front to create volume, while combing your hair up and back. When your hair is almost dry, use a brush to hold the hair in the front upwards and finish blow drying it while it is in this position. This will help it maintain volume. At this point, you have a completed pompadour! Then you can add a little bit of hairspray, especially in the front, to make sure the style holds.
No matter what your dance floor moves are, there’s a hairstyle out there to match. We are wishing you a stylish and fun school dance season with DIY looks that slay!
