5 tips to protect your hair from the summer sun

Welcome, summer! After a long winter, we're ready to lay out our beach towels, bring out our swimsuits and soak up the summer sun. Getting some sun is a fantastic way to relax but can wreak havoc on your hair. This doesn't mean you need to avoid it, just that your locks may need a little extra love and attention. Here are some ways you can help protect your hair while soaking up the sunshine.

Shade your hair

Hats are in style right now, so why not accessorize and protect your hair? No matter the style you choose, covering up will make sure that not only your hair is safe, but can also protect your face and ears.

Don't over-shampoo

Natural oils help protect your hair and shampooing too frequently strips those oils from your hair, drying it out. When the sun and warm air hit, your hair can dry out even more. We recommend keeping those natural oils in your hair by shampooing less frequently and using dry shampoo instead, like the Sexy Hair 3-Day Style Saver Dry Shampoo. The natural oils will act as a barrier and prevent further drying and breakage.

Don't skimp on the conditioner

Leave-in conditioner will be your best friend in the summer and a step you don't want to skip. It allows you to give your hair the extra moisture it craves without washing it. We recommend Solutions by Great Clips® Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner or Healthy Sexy Hair Tri-Wheat Leave-In Conditioner.

Give it a blast of cold

Just like the heat from the sun and the warm summer air, hot water dries out your hair and scalp. You can combat this by adding one simple step to your shower routine: rinse your hair with cold water. This will close your strands to help lock in moisture faster.

Protect your locks

If you will be heat-styling your hair, make sure that it's nourished and protected by spritzing it with thermal protectant. Try a heat protectant like Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press or Solutions by Great Clips® Thermal Protection Spray for a weightless barrier that helps fight the frizz.
