MINNEAPOLIS, May 19, 2010—Great Clips, Inc., the world’s largest salon brand, was recognized today as the winner of the Minnesota Business Ethics Award (MBEA) in the mid-size company category at the 11th annual MBEA Awards Luncheon.
The MBEA recognizes Minnesota businesses that exemplify and promote ethical conduct for the benefit of the workplace, the marketplace, the environment and the community. Companies are judged in three categories based on number of employees: Small (under 100), Mid-Size (100-500), Large (501+).
As a 2010 MBEA winner, Great Clips is in great company, including the large and small category winners from this year—Imation Corporation and Certes Financial Pros, respectively. Great Clips now joins more than 30 past recipients featuring many well-known Minnesota businesses such as St. Jude Medical, The Toro Company and Best Buy.
Upon receiving the award, Great Clips CEO and Chairman Ray Barton recognized the strong relationships Great Clips has with its employees, suppliers and nearly 1,000 franchisees. Barton believes our vision of working together is a key reason for Great Clips’ success.
One example of this is the long-standing relationship between Great Clips and Salon Innovations, the company’s product supplier of 25 years. “Salon Innovations was willing to work with us at a time when we were so small that nobody wanted to take us on. And, we’ve worked together to grow the Great Clips brand all of these years with such a high-level of trust that we’ve never even had a contract.”
Ray also gives credit to Great Clips President Rhoda Olsen for her leadership of the organization, “This award really recognizes Rhoda’s ethical inspiration that drives each of us to live the Great Clips values in day-to-day decision making.”
Although Olsen was unable to attend the luncheon, she left a brief voicemail for all Great Clips employees immediate upon learning of the award. Her voicemail included the following message: “This isn’t about recognition of our success. And, we’ve had a lot of success these past years. This recognition is about who we are in our core—who we are in our hearts. From the bottom of my heart I thank you [staff].”

The MBEA award was established in 1999 by the Minnesota Chapters of the Society of Financial Service Professionals and the Center for Ethical Business Cultures at the University of St. Thomas to raise the standards for business ethics in Minnesota and to honor those companies that exhibit the highest standards. The Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants joined as an award sponsor in 2009, replacing the Rotary Club of Edina as award sponsor from 2004-2009. The foundational standards for the MBEA are found in the Minnesota Principles which describe the relationships which businesses are expected to maintain with customers, employees, owners & investors, suppliers, communities and competitors. The MBEA looks at: What you say you stand for; How you do what you say you stand for; and How well you do it
